Yesterday, the Republicans in the US House of Representatives stood united against the $819 billion dollar pork-bloated "job stimulus" package proposed by President Obama. Their rejection of the program was completely symbolic since Democrats didn't need their votes to pass it. Interestingly the majority party described this rejection as obstructionist partisan nay-saying on the part of the Republicans, while the 11 crossover votes who joined their ranks were characterized simply as "conservative Democrats".
Now that this measure has passed the House, the only chance of stopping it is to convince our Senators that bankrupting this Country is not the way to get our economy back on track. Irresponsible spending got us here, and it will not resolve the problems we now face. Additionally they need to know that we are smart enough to realize spending money on smoking cessation, STD prevention, art endowments and normally scheduled and funded maintenance on Federal facilities is not going to put large numbers of Americans back to work. Since there have been virtually no lay-offs in the public sector, our Government paying itself for expanded internal projects will have no effect at all on the jobless rate. And when did it become everyone's right to have Federally funded Internet broadband? Give me a break! For those of you who would like to contact your Senators, I have provided the link to a web site where you may do so. Click on “Discussion Groups” on our main menu. On that page, you will see a blue widget on the left sidebar. Input your zip code and submit. You will be directed to a site where you may e-mail or have a letter delivered to your Senators. Please let them know how you feel about this package. We have elections coming up again in 2010 so many of them are likely to listen to their constituents. The Senate will be voting on this stimulus package soon, so don’t delay. Exercise your right to be heard!
