Long before January 6, 2021, there was another attack on the U.S. Capitol—one far more destructive, and far less remembered. On November 7, 1983, a bomb detonated in the north wing of the Capitol Building, just steps from the Senate Chamber. It wasn’t planted by fringe conservatives, but by far-left radicals—members of a domestic terror group called the May 19th Communist Organization (M19CO). And when justice finally caught up to them, it was Democrats who helped them walk free.
Let that sink in.
A Bomb in the Capitol—And a Media Blackout
The perpetrators—Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans—were part of a leftist militant network responsible for a series of bombings across the United States in the 1980s. Their stated goal? To overthrow the U.S. government and destroy "imperialist rule" (U.S. Senate Historical Office).
On that November night in 1983, their bomb exploded near the Republican cloakroom, blowing off the door to Senate Minority Leader Robert Byrd’s office and sending shrapnel across the corridor. The perpetrators had phoned in a warning to avoid casualties, but the blast tore through the second floor of the Senate wing, causing hundreds of thousands in damage and sending a violent message to lawmakers (Politico).
The group later issued a communique admitting responsibility, but claimed they didn’t intend to kill senators—“not at this time,” they wrote, revealing a cold, calculated ideology aimed at revolutionary violence (PolitiFact).
Justice Served—Then Undermined
After years on the run, Rosenberg and Evans were captured, tried, and sentenced. Rosenberg was arrested in 1984 with over 700 pounds of explosives, weapons, and fake IDs, earning her a 58-year sentence (Washington Post). Evans, tied directly to the Capitol bombing, was convicted and sentenced to 40 years for conspiracy, illegal weapons possession, and transporting explosives across state lines (Justice.gov).
The American justice system had done its job. These weren’t protesters—they were domestic terrorists.
But nearly two decades later, as President Bill Clinton was walking out the door on his final day in office, he did the unthinkable. With the stroke of a pen, he commuted the sentences of both Rosenberg and Evans, releasing them back into public life (Washington Post, 2001).
The Democrat Behind the Clemency: Jerry Nadler
Perhaps most shocking is who helped make this happen: Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York.
According to a 2001 exposé in The New York Post, Nadler and his rabbi personally lobbied the White House for Rosenberg’s clemency. They passed along information to Clinton’s staff that helped sway the president’s decision to release her (New York Post via Federalist).
Later, Nadler himself confirmed his role, stating in a 2021 interview: “I certainly helped” when asked about his push for Rosenberg’s release (Truthout). He framed her 58-year sentence as excessive, glossing over the fact that she was part of a radical group that had bombed the U.S. Capitol and evaded capture for years.
In other words, a top-ranking Democrat went to bat for a convicted terrorist, and Bill Clinton obliged on his last day in power.
Selective Outrage and Political Hypocrisy
Today, Democrats loudly decry the January 6 Capitol riot as a “threat to democracy”—and yes, rioters who broke the law should be held accountable. But compare the outrage over a few hours of chaos to the deafening silence surrounding an actual bombing of the Capitol by armed Marxists.
Where was the “threat to democracy” when the Senate wing was torn apart by explosives?
Where were the editorials, the documentaries, the FBI raids, the televised hearings?
Instead, the perpetrators were quietly released, praised by left-wing circles, and even allowed to resume public lives—Rosenberg went on to serve on the board of Thousand Currents, a nonprofit that handled donations for Black Lives Matter (Influence Watch).
Meanwhile, law-abiding Americans are smeared as domestic extremists for supporting border security or traditional values.
Conclusion: Justice, or Just Politics?
The story of Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans is not just a forgotten footnote in American history. It’s a window into the two-tiered justice system that the American people are waking up to. When left-wing extremists plant bombs, the Democrat machine shields them. When conservative protesters step out of line, the full weight of the federal government falls on them.
The difference isn’t just in the crime—it’s in the narrative.
Thanks to the Supreme Court, affirmative action is gone. Thanks to Donald Trump, globalist policies are being torn down. And thanks to watchdog voices like Conservative Compass, the American public is finally learning the full story behind who the real threat to democracy has always been.
It’s not working-class patriots in MAGA hats.
It’s radical ideologues, and the Democrats who protect them.
